Good Food For Upset Stomach
The trick to eating good food for upset stomach symptoms is to keep it as simple and as bland as possible. You should avoid eating large meals and foods such as the fried, sugary, spicy or fatty variety are a complete no-go.
Eat Small, Eat Light
Eat small snacks or light meals regularly throughout the day to help give your body some much needed energy and to help it recover from those uncomfortable symptoms.
The B.R.A.T Diet
Many people follow what is known as the B.R.A.T. diet when they are feeling unwell with a sore upset tummy. This stands for: banana, rice, applesauce and toast – plain, simple foods that will not aggravate your digestive system, while it is tries to recuperate.
Eating watery soups, plain oatmeal or porridge is something that many people also find easy to eat when their stomach starts to feel unwell.
If you would like something with a bit of crunch then try plain crackers, plain pretzels (the salty variety are okay as you need some salt replenishment in your body too) or even unbuttered toast.
A food containing ginger or even just eating ginger on its own is particularly useful, as this root is known to have anti-nausea properties, making it a great food for upset stomach.
Incorporating More Solid Foods
Once you can start to keep more solids down and your symptoms start to improve, then you can look to add a few more substantial, solid food for upset stomach into your diet.
Boiling up some chicken breast, making plain pasta, a baked potato (without the skin) or mashing some potatoes up is a good start when moving onto more viable solids.
One thing to note is that you do not want to incorporate any heavy sauces, butter or oils into your light meals, as these may set you back and you have to start all over again!
Avoid Dehydration, Drink More Fluids!
One thing that is very important when you are feeling unwell with an upset stomach is that you ensure that your body does not become dehydrated.
Dehydration is something that is very dangerous for the body and it can often be overlooked when you are suffering with some symptoms and just want to tuck yourself back into bed until you feel better.
Drinking fluids such as water and sports drinks will help to keep your fluid intake and electrolyte count up and prevent you from becoming dehydrated. These drinks are perhaps all you may be able to manage at first, especially if you are experiencing symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea.
Make sure that you take small sips and not big gulps as this can exacerbate the problems, and be very careful with sports drinks as they contain high levels of sugar.
As you begin to build up the amount (and what) you are eating during the day, you can also then look to add more drinks into the equation. Avoid the likes of coffee, alcohol and caffeinated drinks (especially fizzy sodas).
Milk is a bit of a mixed bag as some people with an upset stomach can tolerate it, whilst others can’t – you should be your own judge as to whether milk is something that you can include when you are trying to get well again.
Drinking herbal teas is often recommended by many naturopaths as these can contain healing properties (for example if you have included ginger in your good food for an upset stomach dietary requirements, then you will also find that ginger tea might be a hot beverage option that works for you).
Remember, if you find that your symptoms are not improving at all after a few days or you are suffering from severe dehydration, it is imperative that you contact a medical professional as soon as possible.
