When preparing for a camping trip it can be tricky to determine not only how to pack the foods you bring but also what healthy food for camping.
If you are new to camping or have just decided that you want to continue your healthy lifestyle whilst away from your home for a few days, then below are some hints, tips and most importantly, the right kinds of foods you should be packing before you leave.
Packing healthy food for camping is not as difficult as it may seem and does not need to entail conjuring up detailed menus in order to make sure that you get the nutrients, vitamins and minerals you need to keep you on the go.
It is a common misconception that in order to be able to eat healthily whilst on a camping trip you need to plan elaborate meals, like the kind that you may eat whilst at home.
But unless you are planning on taking a vehicle as large as a motor home or carvan for your trip, this can be very difficult to organize and can take up precious space in the rucksack.
Camping With Healthy Snacks
The best foods to take for camping are those that are small, dried or easy to prepare but still contain all the things you need to be healthy and full of energy.
Foods such as rice cakes, whole wheat crackers, dried fruits, nuts and seeds are easy to store in a backpack, do not take up much room and will keep for a very long time, leaving you free to enjoy the scenery instead of worrying whether your packed food has gone off.
As crackers and rice cakes can be a bit dry you will want something nutritious to put on them – so something like a small jar of peanut butter would do, or a small tub of hummus would be great for dipping them in!
Fruit is also a great way of staying healthy whilst on a camping trip and it does not have to be just dried fruits such as prunes, apricots, cranberries and raisins. You can also take delights such as oranges, apples and bananas with you to enjoy on the later days of your trip.
The trick to keeping fruits fresh and edible for the later days in your camping trip is to ensure that you pack them whole. You need to place them somewhere where they will not be easily bruised or packed too tightly.
If you intend to have some fruit as a snack on the first few days of your journey you can slice them up and place in sealed bags; this way they are already prepared and will remain fresh for you to munch on as you start off.
If you are intending to take soft fruits such as bananas, strawberries or pears then make sure that you use these within the first few days of your trip as they tend to bruise very easily and will decay faster than the hard fruits.
Camping Foods For When You Get Really Hungry!
Now that your snacks have been covered you will be looking at packing healthy food for camping which is considered to be more of a complete meal.
You can still keep these healthy without having to bring the whole kitchen with you!
Dried spaghetti, a jar of pasta sauce and a handful of your favorite vegetables (already peeled, chopped and bagged before you left home) make a tasty meal to enjoy as the sun goes down.
Baked potatoes are also very easy to cook around the camp fire – all you need is a tub of salad and some low-fat margarine for the perfect camping meal.
For breakfast time, a hearty meal is needed to give you the energy to get hiking, biking and kayaking – so oatmeal and those slices of apple will set you up for the action that lies ahead.
Eating healthily whilst camping does not mean that you have to have complex dishes thought out beforehand – some old, simple, nutritious favorites are all that is needed. Just make sure that you pack your backpack in such a way that you can see at first glance what you’ve brought, that it is stored correctly and that it is reachable at the time that you need it!
